1. PowerPoint: introduction to how NY and Long Island came to be

  • Glaciers
    • HH moraine, Ronkonkoma moraine
    • Glacial features (polish, striations, kettle lakes, drumlins, moraines etc.)

2. Instruction

  • How to use a compass
  • Emergency contact information
  • Geology Journal/log
    • Vocabulary/ Experiences/ Things they have learned
  • Agenda on upcoming week
  • Field trip slips?
  • Cameras: USB or email all pictures by Thursday night

Rose Space Museum at Natural History Museum and Central Park Glacial Features

What evidence in Central Park supports the theory that glaciers formed NYC?

Transportation: Subway
Students arrive at: 9:00 am
Departure time: 9:15 am
Return time: 3-4 am

  • 10:30 am Planetarium show (30 minutes)

 

  • Explore museum: Cosmic Pathway, Scale of universe, Hall of universe, hall of planet earth

 

  • 11:40- 12:15 break for lunch: Bagged lunch or lunch at museum ($15)

 

  • Start at 12:30 and walk from Museum to Explore NYC’s Central Park and it’s Bedrock outcrops, erratic’s and Plucking site

 

  • Using a compass to determine direction the glacier came from

Students will need:
Journal
Camera
Warm and appropriate clothing (sweaters, appropriate foot wear, hats, scarf’s, gloves, jackets)
Bagged lunch or money ($15)

  1. Hydrofracking Game. Students play as Farmers and as small business owners. Dan and Danielle are the Natural gas company. Small businesses profit while farmers suffer

NY Times Articles: (Shared Inquiry Process): Class will be divided into two groups and given 1 of 2 articles either supporting or disagreeing with hydrofracking

Directed notes related to evidence supporting hydrofracking
(SH)= Supporting hydrofracking

  1. As Decision Nears on Gas Drilling, Ad War Heats Up in New York State

Directed notes related to evidence disagreeing with hydrofracking
(DH)= Disagreeing with hydrofracking

Creating Ad of their own in their group to SH or DH hydrofracking and presenting it in a debate as they use evidence from the articles to support their side.

  1. Revisit Hydrofracking article and movies. Debating if we should or should not lift the ban on Hydrofracking in New York State.
  2. Students will write a letter to Gov. Cuomo about their feelings on hydrofracking supported with evidence from news sources, documentaries, and NY Times articles.
